Company Description Justice At Last, Inc. is the only nonprofit law firm in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated exclusively to serving the legal needs of human trafficking survivors, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, abilities and equity needs, nationality or type of trafficking. Founded in 2015 by Rose Mukhar, the organization provides free, legal representation that emphasizes dignity and is survivor-centered, culturally sensitive, linguistically appropriate, trauma-informed, and rights-based. Our specialization includes enforcing crime victims’ rights, vacating criminal records survivors were forced to commit while being trafficked, protecting parental rights, immigration relief and identity theft recovery. We legal representation and advocacy empowers survivors to seek and achieve on their own terms.

Role Description The Board Member role is a volunteer and there is a residency requirement within the San Francisco Bay Area.

Justice At Last Board Members represent the community we serve, have Board of Director experience and or have a particular skill set that will benefit the organization. We are actively recruiting attorneys interested in joining our Board who have practiced law for at least 5 years. The primary duty is to be an ambassador on behalf of Justice At Last and know, understand, and support our mission. Terms are 3 years, and there are 6 meetings per year, usually the 1st Saturday of every odd month from 10am to 12pm. Most of our meetings are virtual, although we intentionally host at least one hybrid meeting each year.

Board Members provide governance, strategic direction, and fiduciary oversight to support Justice At Last’s mission and long-term sustainability. Typical responsibilities include participating in regular board and committee meetings, reviewing organizational policies, budgets, and strategic plans, and contributing to fundraising and resource development efforts.

Board Members act as ambassadors for the organization, strengthening community partnerships and promoting awareness of human trafficking and survivor-centered legal services. The role also involves collaborating with the Executive Director and other board members on key decisions, risk management, and organizational performance evaluation.

Qualifications

Experience in nonprofit governance, board service, or organizational leadership, with an understanding of fiduciary duties and strategic planning.
Background in law, public policy, social services, healthcare, philanthropy, or a related field that supports Justice At Last’s mission and survivor-centered approach.
Skills in fundraising, donor relations, or development, including comfort with networking, cultivating relationships, and supporting events or campaigns.
Knowledge of financial oversight, budgeting, or accounting principles to help review organizational finances and ensure responsible stewardship of resources.
Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work respectfully with diverse communities and stakeholders.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed, culturally sensitive practices; prior experience with human trafficking, gender-based violence, or related issues is beneficial.
Willingness to contribute time to board meetings, committee work, and organizational events; prior volunteer or community engagement experience is an asset.
Residence within the San Francisco Bay Area is required.
